Overview of the Clinic Day

9:00 am - Volunteers arrive at the Cathedral Clinic (1212 Prairie St., Houston, TX 77002) for orientation. At this time the H.O.M.E.S. clinic day will begin. A briefing will take place and the clinic teams will be formed. In general, teams consist of a clinical student, two basic sciences students, and a pharmacy student.

If you are unfamiliar with the location, please see the map for directions.

There is free parking available in the parking garage that is adjacent to the clinic (the garage entrance is on San Jacinto, right after the intersection with Texas). You may reach the garage from the Texas Medical Center by traveling north on Fannin. Fannin northbound splits off into San Jacinto northbound (there is no northbound Fannin after the Museum District).

The clinic entrance is on Prairie Street. After you park in the garage, exit the elevators onto San Jacinto (leave the garage on the side facing the church, not not the side that faces the Cotton Exchange building). When you exit the elevators/stairs on the first floor, walk outside and to the right. You will be facing San Jacinto. Turn right onto the sidewalk, pass the entrance to the garage again and keep walking until the next intersection.  This street is Prairie Street. Turn right onto Prairie (do not cross the street) and you will see the entrance to the cafeteria through the black gates. Enter through the gates, but do NOT enter the cafeteria. Follow the glass windows to the right of the cafeteria entrance until you see the glass door for the Cathedral Clinic (the labeling of the door is poor, so be alert).

Knock on the door and the manager will let you in at 9:00 am. (You may want to print this page out for directions). Please do not follow the signs for 'Volunteers' when you leave the garage, as these are for the church's volunteers and please do not enter through the cafeteria entrance (volunteers are prohibited from entering through those doors by the church).

Looking inside the clinic's front door:

Basic science / clinical students please remember to bring your oto/opthalmoscope and reflex hammer. Please try to avoid bring purses or other valuable items to the clinic. If you must bring a purse, please leave it in the preceptor room or with the clinic manager. Also, please remember scrubs are NOT acceptable clinic attire.

9:30 am After the orientation, we will be having coffee/tea with the patrons of the cafeteria. A unique component of the HOMES model is that it allows students to sit down with the patrons during coffee/tea time. This is a great way to get comfortable talking to our homeless population.

10:00 am - We will return to the Cathedral Clinic and see the first round of patients. Teams conduct patient interviews and perform a physical exam. Clinical students help teach basic science students the proper physical and history taking skills. The team then convenes with an attending physician to present the patient history and discuss an initial assessment. Basic science students, helped by clinical science students, are encouraged to learn to present patients to the attending. The physician returns to the exam room with the team to see the patient and offer constructive advice regarding student physical exam findings and their assessment as well as discuss with the patient and the team an appropriate plan of action. All students please remember to bring your stethoscope.

11:30 am - The second round of patients will be seen.

1:00 pm - The clinic day ends. All involved students clean-up their rooms, take care of last-minute paperwork, and then gather to reflect on and discuss the day's events. Students are free to leave after the reflection, which generally lasts about 30 minutes and ends by 2:00 pm at the latest.

How do I sign up?

Sign-up Here A calendar of clinic dates will come up; choose a date on which there are open slots for the type of student you are (e.g. Basic Science Student), and then fill out the required fields. After you submit your request, a reply will be sent to you in a day or so. Your name should appear on the HOMES schedule for the requested date(s). Remember: once you have committed to that day, then it is your responsibility to be there or to find a replacement for yourself if you are subsequently unable to make it. The smooth operation of the clinic depends on student follow-through in this respect.
